What Is 3D Printing and How Can It Bring Your Idea to Life?

Polywerk3D — Professional 3D printing service in Tartu, Estonia. Prototypes, small batches, details, and more.

How does 3D printing work?

3D printed parts

3D printing is a manufacturing method where objects are built layer by layer from a digital model. Unlike traditional manufacturing, which cuts or mills material away, a 3D printer adds material precisely where needed — using only the material needed for the part and its supports.

The process is straightforward:

  1. Design — Send us your idea, sketch, or 3D file. If you don’t have a model, we’ll create one.
  2. Preparation — We prepare the file for printing, select the right material and settings.
  3. Printing — The printer builds the object layer by layer. Depending on size, this takes hours to days.
  4. Finishing — We remove supports, sand, and if needed, paint or treat the surface.

FDM vs SLA — which technology is right for you?

We offer two main 3D printing technologies:

FDM (filament)

  • Accuracy: 0.1–0.2 mm
  • Strength: Strong, functional
  • Price: More affordable — from €12
  • Best for: Prototypes, housings, tools, large parts

SLA (resin)

  • Accuracy: 0.025–0.05 mm
  • Strength: Detailed, but more brittle
  • Price: Higher — from €31
  • Best for: Miniatures, jewelry, dental models

What materials are available?

3D printed prototype
  • PLA — Popular and affordable choice for display models, samples, and decorative items. Not suitable for high temperatures.
  • PETG — Our recommended default for most projects. Strong, weather-resistant.
  • Resin — Ultra-precise material for fine details: miniatures, jewelry, dental models.
  • Nylon, carbon fiber & more — Specialized solutions for projects requiring high strength and durability.

Tip: Clients often choose PLA because it’s cheaper. But if the part needs to perform in real-world conditions, we always recommend PETG — small price difference, big quality gain.

Who benefits from 3D printing?

  • Product development — Get a prototype in days, not weeks.
  • Engineers & builders — Functional parts, housings, and tools made to your exact specifications.
  • Artists & designers — Miniatures, sculptures, architectural models, and decorative elements.
  • Businesses — Replacement parts, custom tools, small production runs, and promotional items.
  • Personal projects — Broken parts, personalized gifts, hobby projects.

Why order from a professional service?

A home 3D printer is a fun hobby, but a professional service delivers results you can rely on. We offer a complete solution from concept to finished product: 3D modeling, technology and material selection, quality control, and finishing.
